Elin's journey and the definitions of love and family
Time & Location

About The Event
Elin McCready is a linguistics professor at Aoyama Gakuin University and has been married for 20 years to a Japanese national, with 3 kids. Two years ago, she registered her female identity in the U.S. as part of her gender transition process. After returning to Japan and updating her permanent residence card in line with her new U.S. passport, the process was halted when officials at the local ward office realized that Elin is married - and that a completed registration would imply the government’s recognition of same-sex marriage. The candid lives and perspectives of Elin and her family as they persist alongside her gender transition under Japan’s bureaucratic and social restraints are captured in “It’s Just Our Family,” a newly-released documentary by director Ameya and her Ikix Studio crew.
WomEnpowered International is excited to welcome Elin and Ameya to have a vibrant conversation about the documentary, the meaning of family and marriage in a system that presumes heteronormativity as their only expression, and our role in bringing forward a society that upholds every individual’s freedom to love.
