Launch of Digital 'El Tendedero': Join Us in Solidarity Against Harassment and Sexual Violence

Updated: Apr 21, 2020

In these trying times of COVID-19, WomEmpowered International stands in solidarity with everyone who is currently affected by this virus and its repercussions, but especially with the women who are more likely to become victims of violence. As Anita Bhatia posits, Deputy Executive Director of UN Women, we support social distancing measures to combat the spread of the coronavirus, but we also recognize that this isolation “provides an opportunity for abusers to unleash more violence.”

As a result of this, we feel now is a critical time to launch an initiative titled ‘El Tendedero’ - a creation from a Mexican artist Monica Mayer in which individuals share their experiences with harassment and sexual violence against women by writing on cards and posting them on a clothesline. Due to COVID-19, we decided to bring the project online and create a digital clothesline. By responding to this google form, you will contribute to raising awareness of these issues - and the responses, of course will be done in an anonymized manner. They will be published on a blog that will serve as a ‘tendedero’ - a Spanish term for clothesline.

According to the World Health Organization, one out of three women around the globe experience physical or sexual violence throughout their lives. Help us take a stand, generate momentum and create awareness around this issue in Japan by filling out this google form.

Most importantly, if you or anyone you know is a victim of violence, please refer to this comprehensive list of resources in Japan where they can seek help.

This is a trying time for the world, but even in times of national emergency, especially then, we must raise the voices of the vulnerable to ensure safety and justice for all.
